Historically sensitive exterior work in Essex

Essex Village is one of the best-kept streetscapes on the river, and its Federal-period houses deserve exterior work that respects the original lines: clapboard reveals, trim profiles, and shutters included.

Quiet New England harbor at golden hour with wooden docks, moored sailboats, and shingled cottages

A village that sets a high bar

Essex Village has been looked after for two hundred years, and it shows — Federal and Greek Revival houses with original clapboard lines, paneled shutters, and entry surrounds that were carpentry showpieces when they were built. Work here is judged against the street, and the street is good.

Essex is also a river town rather than an open-coast one. Less salt spray than Old Saybrook, more shade and still air off the coves, which trades one problem for another. North-facing walls under the village’s big trees hold moisture, and that is where we find the soft clapboard and mildew.

Our Essex work

  • Cedar siding and clapboard matched to original reveals and trim profiles
  • Selective repair over wholesale replacement where original material is sound; older growth lumber is worth saving
  • Window replacement with divided-lite patterns that match the period of the house
  • Wood entry doors where the entry surround calls for the real thing

Working with what is already right

On a house with history, the cheapest-looking mistake is modern stock nailed over period details. We photograph and measure existing profiles before tear-off, source or mill matches, and keep the lines the house started with. It takes longer. On these houses it is the only version of the work worth paying for.

From Essex we also run crews to Old Saybrook and East Lyme; all ten towns are on the service areas page.

Careful work for a careful village

If your Essex house has original details worth keeping, we will build the plan around preserving them. Call to talk it through.
