Window replacement for Westbrook’s year-round cottages

Half of Westbrook’s shoreline housing started as summer cottages: West Beach, Old Kelsey Point, Pointina. A lot of them are now lived in year-round, and the single-pane windows and thin walls they were built with are the first thing owners want fixed.

From summer cottage to year-round home

West Beach, Old Kelsey Point, Pointina, Stannard Beach — much of Westbrook’s shoreline was platted for summer people, and the cottages were built accordingly: single-pane windows, minimal insulation, walls meant to be closed up by Columbus Day. A generation later, many of those houses are occupied in January.

Making that work starts at the openings. Original cottage windows leak heat in both directions, and they are usually the first thing a new year-round owner replaces. Done with the right glass and real air sealing, the difference in the February heating bill is not subtle.

How we help in Westbrook

  • Window replacement — full-frame where cottage framing has settled, with egress brought up to code in sleeping rooms
  • Insulated entry doors replacing hollow summer-house doors
  • Re-siding with housewrap added where the original walls never had any
  • Gutters on cottages that were built without them entirely

Sequencing a conversion sensibly

Owners rarely do everything at once, and they should not have to. We help sequence the work: windows and doors first for the coming winter, siding and gutters in a later season — so each phase stands on its own and nothing gets done twice.

Also serving Clinton and Old Saybrook on either side, and the rest of our shoreline towns.
